ABOUT UHURU
“Uhuru, which means “freedom” in the Kiswahili language, is situated on the northern slopes of Mt Kenya near the town of Timau. The farm is at an altitude of 2600m above sea level, making it one of the highest rose farms in Kenya.
“The high altitude combined with the latitude (Uhuru is just a few kilometers from the equator) mean that the roses grow slowly, producing much bigger flower heads. And the high ultraviolet radiation gives the roses brighter, more vibrant colors. “
“Uhuru has a small but experienced management team led by Ivan Freeman, who has been growing roses in this area of Kenya since 1998. Their aim is to produce consistent high quality cut roses with large head size, excellent vase life and presentation.”
Uhuru currently has 12 hectares of roses grown using modern production techniques and equipment. Use of integrated pest management and proposed investment in renewable power supply ensures the smallest possible environmental footprint possible. “
